How to read a cosmetic product label

The ingredient list is not decoration. Here is what the order means, where fragrance hides, and what to look at first.

Cum citești eticheta unui produs cosmetic

On any cosmetic product, ingredients are listed in descending order of quantity. The first five tell you almost the whole story: if an extract the label makes a fuss about appears at the very end, it is a selling point rather than an active ingredient.

The first five ingredients

Water (Aqua) comes first almost every time, because most creams and shampoos are emulsions. What follows it is what matters: oils, plant butters, cleansing agents. If a plant oil appears in the first third of the list, the product really does contain enough of it to feel on the skin.

Where fragrance hides

Parfum or Fragrance covers an entire blend, not a single substance. That is not automatically a bad thing, but if your skin reacts easily, fragrance is the first suspect when a new product stings.

What "natural" does and does not mean

The word is not regulated the same way everywhere. A product can be 95% natural and still contain synthetic preservatives, which are there for a serious reason: without them, anything containing water becomes a growth medium within weeks. A well-chosen preservative protects the skin rather than irritating it.

What is worth remembering: read the first five ingredients, check where fragrance appears, and treat claims on the front of the pack as a headline, not as proof.
